Aquatic Species/Ecosystem and Wetland Interactions with Transportation
North American beavers (Castor canadensis) play a critical role creating and maintain aquatic habit. Despite the biotic and abiotic benefits they provide to many watersheds in the arid west, this keystone species is often maligned and lethally managed. This poster explains the benefits of beaver, illustrates cost effective ways to integrate beaver's habitat modifications into road mitigation and describes a successful CalTrans case study that relies on non-lethal management strategies to promote co-existence and eliminate the need for lethal control.
